In 1860 Noah Stephens and his family were living near Austin, in south Cass County. When southern forces under General Rains headed south after the Battle of Booneville they moved through the Austin area. One of Noah Stephen's oxen was slaughtered for food, leaving him without a yoke to do farming. He joined the Cass County Home Guards on June 27, 1861. Later he moved with his family to Owen County, Indiana. He and his son, Levi J., joined the Indiana 6th Cavalry. In 1870 Noah was not listed with his family. What was his fate? Was he killed during the War or did he die of disease? The search continues.
